Our Process
How Your Bag Is Made
Most leather bags in India are mass-produced using synthetic or corrected leather. They may look good at first — but they don’t last.
At Vintage Hides, we build differently.
Each bag is crafted using full-grain leather — the strongest and most durable part of the hide — designed to last years, not months.
For those who want a durable, everyday leather bag that lasts for years.
How are Vintage Hides bags made?
Vintage Hides bags are handcrafted using full-grain leather. Each piece goes through material selection, precision cutting, folded edge construction, stitching, and final quality checks before it reaches you.
Selecting the Right Leather
We use full-grain leather — not PU, not bonded, not corrected. This is the top layer of the hide, known for strength, durability, and natural texture.
This ensures your bag won’t peel or degrade like synthetic alternatives.
Precision Cutting
Each panel is cut with attention to grain direction and structure. This helps maintain shape and durability over time.
Poor cutting leads to weak bags. We don’t allow that.
Folded Edge Construction
Instead of using painted edges, we fold and stitch the leather. This creates a stronger and cleaner finish.
- ✔ No peeling or cracking edges
- ✔ Better durability with daily use
- ✔ Cleaner, more premium finish
This is where most low-quality bags cut corners.
What this means for you: edges that stay intact over time.
Stitching & Assembly
Strong, consistent stitching ensures the bag holds its structure with everyday use.
Each piece is assembled for durability — not just appearance.
Final Quality Check
Each bag is inspected before dispatch to ensure finish, structure, and durability meet our standard.
If it doesn’t meet quality, it doesn’t ship.

Why leather matters in the first place
Not all bags are made the same. Materials decide how long a bag lasts.
Synthetic bags may look good at first — but they crack, peel, and lose shape quickly.
That’s why most bags fail — not because of design, but because of material.
Real leather behaves differently — it gets better with use and lasts for years.
Built using leather sourced from Vaniyambadi — one of India’s oldest leather hubs.
Why full-grain leather matters
Most bags under ₹5000 use synthetic or corrected leather. These materials crack, peel, and lose shape over time.
Full-grain leather behaves differently:
- ✓ Does not peel like PU
- ✓ Becomes softer and richer with use
- ✓ Lasts significantly longer

This is why one good bag replaces multiple low-quality ones.

What we don’t do
- ✕ We don’t use synthetic or PU leather
- ✕ We don’t rely on glued or painted edges that peel
- ✕ We don’t cut corners to reduce cost
I started Vintage Hides after my wife struggled to find a real leather bag that wasn’t overpriced or fake.
With access to leather from Vaniyambadi — a town known for leather manufacturing — we realised the material was available, but good products at the right price were not.
So we decided to build it ourselves — using full-grain leather, without shortcuts.

Frequently Asked Questions
About our craftsmanship and genuine leather bags in India.
What is full-grain leather? +
Full-grain leather is the highest quality grade of leather available. It comes from the top layer of the hide and retains all the natural grain — making it extremely strong, durable, and capable of developing a rich patina over time. It is not sanded, corrected, or split. The same grade used in luxury bags costing ₹20,000 and above.
How are Vintage Hides bags made? +
Vintage Hides bags are handcrafted through a 5-step process: full-grain LWG-certified leather is selected, each panel is precision-cut along the grain direction, edges are folded and stitched (not painted), stitching and assembly are done for durability, and every bag undergoes a final quality inspection before dispatch. Leather is sourced from Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu.
Is full-grain leather better than PU or synthetic leather? +
Yes. PU (polyurethane) is a synthetic plastic coating that peels and cracks within 6 to 12 months, especially in India's heat and humidity. Full-grain leather is a natural material that becomes softer and more characterful with daily use. It lasts 5 to 10 years or more with basic care — far outlasting any synthetic alternative.
How long does a genuine leather bag last? +
A well-crafted full-grain leather bag typically lasts 5 to 10 years or more with daily use. With basic care — wiping with a dry cloth and conditioning every 6 months — it can last significantly longer. Unlike synthetic bags that degrade, full-grain leather gets better and more personal with every use.
What is folded edge construction in leather bags? +
Folded edge construction means the leather edges are turned inward and stitched down rather than coated with edge paint. Painted edges crack and peel with daily use. Folded and stitched edges stay intact permanently. This is more time-consuming to produce but results in a significantly stronger and more premium finish — and is how every Vintage Hides bag is built.
Where is the leather in Vintage Hides bags sourced from? +
The leather is sourced from Vaniyambadi in Tamil Nadu — one of India's most established leather manufacturing hubs with decades of artisan heritage. Vaniyambadi produces leather used by global brands. This local supply chain allows Vintage Hides to use LWG-Gold certified leather at fair prices.
What does LWG-certified leather mean? +
LWG (Leather Working Group) is an international certification body that audits tanneries for environmental standards, quality, and traceability. LWG-Gold is the highest level — confirming the leather meets strict chemical management, water usage, and waste standards. For Indian buyers, LWG certification is a reliable guarantee of genuinely high-quality, responsibly produced leather.
Is Cash on Delivery available for Vintage Hides bags in India? +
Yes. All Vintage Hides bags are available on Cash on Delivery across most pin codes in India including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. A small ₹99 courier handling fee applies for COD. Prepaid orders via UPI, card, or net banking receive an additional 10% discount and free express shipping. Delivery takes 3–5 working days via BlueDart.
